IOSH warns that safety is not a joke The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has warned that safety should not be treated as a joke.

Rob Strange, chief executive of the IOSH, said people are right to show some scepticism about health and safety regulations.

He explained that there is too much focus on rules that appear to ban fun activities in the name of health and safety.

Indeed, Norwich Union Risk Services revealed earlier this month that nearly 40 per cent of UK companies do not get suitable advice on health and safety matters.

However, he suggested that forcing people to wear safety glasses when playing conkers is not necessarily because of the dangers to the individual.

Mr Strange said organisers of events such as these are often trying to protect themselves from being sued in the event of an unlikely accident.

"If we continue to belittle real health and safety issues then we're in danger of neglecting serious workplace risks," he said.

The expert went on to say that "knocking" safety procedures and rules only serves to expose more employees in danger.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19139174-ADNFCR
