IOSH welcomes rail safety strategy The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) backed the Office of Rail Regulation's (ORR's) new five-year safety strategy.

IOSH said it hopes the new initiative will help the rail industry in the UK continue its "upward curve in safety performance".

The president of the body Nattasha Freeman said: "I welcome the vision of zero industry caused fatalities for workers and passengers on the railway network."

However, she noted that it is "crucial" that the sector is not allowed to "rest on its laurels".

Ms Freeman said the ORR needs plenty of resources to achieve its goals, adding that a reduction in inspector numbers will not help the body reach its target.

Employers in the rail industry should provide staff with personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hi vis clothing to ensure they are properly protected in the workplace.

Training staff in accordance with the PPE at Work Regulations 1992 could help minimise the dangers faced by rail industry employees.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18918999-ADNFCR
