Importance of training emphasised by HSE The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has urged firms to ensure that they provide suitable training for staff using workplace equipment.

It stated that some accidents could easily be avoided if employees were given suitable training in how to operate machinery.

Alison Ashworth, HSE inspector, commented: "[Employers] need to take positive action to manage risks, particularly where the work involves using forklift trucks."

"HSE will not hesitate to take action against those who fall short of the law," she added.

Those who wish to ensure that they adhere to safety legislation should examine the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, which states that each employer should instruct workers in the use of all equipment they are required to use.

The provision of suitable personal protective equipment, such as safety gloves or hi vis clothing is also advisable for certain tasks according information on the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 on the HSE website.
