Inquest into accident at recycling unit The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been called in to investigate the death of a man who was involved in an accident with the machinery at a recycling unit.

The man was crushed by heavy machinery and the HSE will now be examining the work environment and circumstances surrounding his death to assess the accountability of the employers or lack thereof.

Employers should ensure that workers are wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment and have suitable training when dealing with dangerous heavy machinery.

Ray Prichard, spokesman for the HSE, said: "Inspectors were on site straight after the incident to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and to work alongside police and coroner."

Machinery in the workplace must be suitable for its use, and properly maintained with all necessary safeguards in place, according to the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
