Inquiry at Scottish factory following explosion

Inquiry at Scottish factory following explosion A public inquiry into a fatal gas explosion in May 2004 at a Scottish factory has started.

The blast claimed the lives of nine employees and 30 others were seriously injured.

Last year saw the company in question fined £400,000 after it admitted to the High Court that it was guilty of health and safety breaches.

The explosion was caused by a leak in faulty pipework that had not been checked since 1969, which led to a build up of liquid petroleum gas.

Other firms wishing to avoid similar accidents and court action should ensure that employees are safe, whether this means that machinery is properly maintained or that they are provided with suitable workwear such as safety helmets and safety gloves.

The Health and Safety Executive recently issued warnings to the public about the dangers of some potentially unsafe gas installations carried out by a Shropshire firm.
