Insurance is legal requirement for many employers

Insurance is legal requirement for many employers As well as taking practical steps to protect workers from accident or ill health, employers should also consider their legal obligations in the form of insurance cover.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has reminded bosses that they need to take out liability insurance in case an employee has an accident and requires compensation.

Two joint landlords were recently prosecuted by the organisation for failing to take out employers' insurance to protect several of their staff members, despite being warned several times by inspectors that they were breaking the law.

HSE investigation inspector Shellie Bee commented: "Employers' liability compulsory insurance is a legal requirement and not an optional extra.

"Because [the landlords] cut corners to save money, they were putting their employees in a position where they could have potentially suffered a life changing illness or injury at work and had no recourse to any kind of compensation," she added.

Safety signs could also be put up at work to display important information to staff.
