Kids taught to demand health and safety standards

Kids taught to demand health and safety standards Young workers should be given the knowledge to question their employers when health and safety procedures are not being followed, a charity has suggested.

Dave Towers from charity Keighley Worksafe Project wants Britain's youngsters to be taught the potential consequences of reckless and health and safety management from a young age.

He told the Keighley News: "The pupils need to know that if an employer asks them to do something that they think is dangerous, they should be questioning it."

The charity has recently offered free lessons to pupils at schools in the Bradford area, which include a DVD showing examples of potential hazards in the workplace.

After 61 people died from the result of a slip, trip or fall from height in British workplaces last year, one of the messages which the pupils might have been taught was how equipment such as safety boots and safety signs can prevent accidents from taking place.

Providing such protective gear can help firms ensure their employees' safety is guaranteed as far as "reasonably practicable" - a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19037111-ADNFCR
