King's Cross Fire changed the course of PPE, broadcaster says The 1987 King's Cross fire, the 20th anniversary of which was yesterday, caused improvements to be made to personal protective equipment (PPE), a broadcaster has said.

Discussing the tragedy in which 31 people lost their lives and more than 60 were injured, the BBC mentioned improvements made to PPE after the incident's inquiry, as well as talking about the changes made to firefighter safety procedures.

Among some of the changes were the introduction of Kevlar headgear to replace the combed helmet, padded over-trousers and larger tunics.

Some fire services decided to use helmets which protect ears as well.

The government has spent £56 million in the past three years on improvement to PPE for the fire service.

Employers are required within the workplace to "control the risks to safety from fire and explosions" by way of The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18360460-ADNFCR
