Labour MP criticises government response Labour MP Terry Rooney, who headed a report committee that called for more site inspections by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), has said he is disappointed by the government's reaction.

Mr Rooney's committee urged the government to review the resources of the HSE's construction inspectorate, noting that fatalities last year in the sector increased by 28 per cent.

The government responded to the report by saying that it did not believe that a link could be drawn between one year's accident figures and its allocation of resources.

Mr Rooney said: "It is pathetic. They have conceded nothing at all. The government is being extremely defensive and complacent."

Recently the HSE warned employers against complacency despite the number of workplace deaths dropping to 228 in the most recent reporting period.

Employers looking to reduce the risk of deaths on their site should ensure that there are suitable safety signs and that safety helmets and hi vis clothing are worn where required.
