Ladder exchange scheme hailed as a 'step in the right direction' The recent ladder exchange initiative, which encouraged Britons to swap broken or faulty ladders for new ones at discounted prices, has been hailed as a "step in the right direction" by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

According to the safety authority, about 7,000 broken or dodgy ladders have been handed in over the last three years as part of the campaign.

As a result, Geoffrey Podger, chief executive of the HSE, insisted that the project has proved to be a success.

He said: "We have exchanged nearly 7,000 old ladders for new ones over the last three years and we are hoping to trade even more when the ladder exchange initiative returns later this year."

The HSE recently revealed that more than 4,000 employees suffered a major injury as a result of a fall from height in 2008-09.

Consequently, the safety authority has urged workers to use safety helmets to protect themselves in case of a fall.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19667282-ADNFCR
