Ladder safety improves

Ladder safety improves The Ladder Association has reported that the number of injuries caused by falls from ladders is in decline.

At the start of the century, 2,631 ladder-related injuries were reported to the Health and Safety Executive, but by 2009/10 this figure had fallen to 1,817.

This reduction comes despite the total number of falls from height reported to HSE increasing by an average of 51 per cent between 2007 and 2010.

Chris Ball, chairman of the Ladder Association, said: "We have constantly promoted the message that if it's right to use a ladder, use the right ladder and get trained to use it safely and that message finally seems to be getting through."

Employers can help the decline in ladder accidents continue by ensuring that their workers are using devices such as ladder protectors, which are rubber grips that help to stop ladders from slipping on a range of surfaces, and have taken a ladder safety training course.
