Lancashire firms facing spot checks Companies in Lancashire are to be subjected to a series of spot checks from mid-October to mid-November.

An average of one worker from the region has died every 12 months for the last five years as a result of industrial accidents.

However, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Heath and Safety Awareness officers will partner with local officials to inspect industrial sites in the county.

They will be looking for the common causes of industrial fatalities and if the initiative is successful, it is thought that it may be extended throughout the north-west.

Dorothy Shaw, enforcement liaison officer for Lancashire, commented: "Our hope is that we can prevent some of the serious and yet completely unnecessary incidents which the HSE and local authorities investigate on a routine basis."

Companies looking to improve safety in their premises should ensure that they comply with the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at Work 1992, which provides guidelines on the appropriate use of safety boots and other PPE.
