Load-bearing equipment 'must be checked for safety'

Categories: General Health and Safety |

Load-bearing equipment 'must be checked for safety' Equipment used to bear weight or move heavy materials to other locations must be checked thoroughly to ensure it is fit to be used around employees, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has advised.

Its reminder came after a worker died at a factory in Wales when a wire rope hoist being used to carry a suspended crate of car parts failed, resulting in the load falling on him.

An investigation into the incident revealed the hoist had been reassembled after being relocated to the factory, but the company had not brought in a qualified specialist to ensure it was safe to be used.

HSE inspector Janet Viney commented: "If a competent person had examined the hoist, the changes which were made to accommodate its new position would have been recognised and the safety mechanisms would have been adjusted."

Steven Binnie, product manager at Arco, commented: "The significance of safety helmets cannot be stressed enough, to ensure the safety of workers. Regulation 4 of the Personal Protection Equipment at Work Regulations (1992) and the Construction (Head Protection) Regulations (1989) require that head protection be used in hazardous areas."ADNFCR-1200-ID-800582077-ADNFCR
