Successful fundraising in today's over-saturated world requires drastic action and Thomas Martin's take on 'Lock Up Your Boss' has certainly done that. Thomas, who is joint MD of Hull based Arco, was locked up in a prison van today (Friday 13th April) wearing a bright orange 'convicts' outfit to raise money for the Dove House Hospice v the more money donated by his loyal employees and suppliers, the longer he stayed locked up!
'I agreed to be locked up as a present to everyone who knows me!' explained Thomas. 'But once I agreed to this, I suddenly realised that my colleagues and friends would pay more money to keep me locked up than to release me. My fund raising target was �2,000 and if people paying to keep me locked up achieved this, then so be it! Seriously though, agreeing to donate a day of my time to help the Dove House Hospice is my way of recognising the excellent work they do and doing my bit to help raise the �4 million they need each year to continue to offer their services.' As part of Arco's policy to support local charities, the company encourages every employee to take up to two volunteering days each year. This means that UK based charities benefit from a massive 2,800 volunteering days that are taken in company time!
Thomas was restrained in the prison van outside Arco's head office on Waverly Street from 10am. The prison van was then taken to outside Arco's National Distribution Centre (NDC) and finally ended up outside the Dove House Hospice itself.
Thomas' target of �2,000 is likely to be exceeded because of the generous donations he has received from Arco's staff from around the UK whether they be from the Head Office on Waverley Street, the local Hull branch, their NDC or Arco branches from across the UK as well as Supply Partners from around the world who were all very keen to keep him there!
The Dove House Hospice provides specialist palliative care within Hull and across East Yorkshire for adults with life limiting illnesses. Their services are provided free of charge to patients and their families and without support, the local community would be without a vital service.
