Long working hours damage health

Long working hours damage health Working for long periods of time can negatively impact upon an individual's health, it has been claimed.

According to the findings of a report from the Work Life Balance Centre, a total of 76 per cent of those polled admitted to suffering from feelings stress within the workplace, with 47 per cent also confirming that over a 12-month period prior to the study, symptoms of a stress-related illness had been experienced.

However, the study found that long hours are not necessarily problematic and that the amount of control over time spent at work is an important factor, reports Norwich Union Risk Services.

"Those that might actually work fewer hours, but at the same time have less control over the amount of time they work, can suffer from work-related stress, or even from anxiety and depression," said Julie Hurst, a representative from the Work Life Balance Centre.

Dubbed the 24/7 report, the centre's findings are based upon an internet study of 2,300 individuals.

In related news, the Health and Safety Executive has warned that feelings of fatigue can generate a number of symptoms, including poor attention levels and even lapses in memory.
