MPs back WHAC Basic healthy and safety should be a compulsory part of the school curriculum, a group of MPs have said.

Michael Clapham MP, chairman of the all-party group on occupational safety and health, has gained the support of 92 of his colleagues for an early day motion requesting that a workplace hazard awareness course (WHAC) be made mandatory for year ten pupils.

The WHAC course was developed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Institution of Occupational Safety and Health in a bid to educate young people about the potential dangers they could face when they leave school for their first job.

Mr Clapham said he believes the WHAC course could help to reduce the number of young people killed and seriously injured while at work.

He added: "I want to see how we can help get this invaluable course made compulsory for all students on the national curriculum before they leave school and go to work for the first time."

The HSE recommends that any employer taking on a young person should carry out a risk assessment in order to identify whether they need to install safety signs or provide appropriate workwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18655679-ADNFCR
