MRSA 'can be solved by targeted cleaning' The way to combat MRSA is by targeted cleaning, an expert microbiologist has said.

Dr Stephanie Dancer said that cleaning staff should mainly target the areas of hospitals which hands are most likely to come in to contact with.

The BBC quoted her as saying: "Governments across the UK need to reconsider their approaches.

"We are just trying to remove visible dirt from areas such as floors when this is not the best approach."

Dr Dancer also suggested that the government's deep clean initiative was overkill, comparing it with "using a sledgehammer to crack a nut".

Hospitals in the US are also fighting against MRSA and some, such as in Hamilton, have been using personal protection equipment such as gloves and face masks to try and avoid contamination.

PPE has proven vital in the fight against the spread of animal diseases such as foot and mouth and bluetongue.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18337949-ADNFCR
