Majority of Europeans predict recession will impact health and safety Six out of ten Europeans expect health and safety conditions in their workplace to diminish as a result of the recession.

This is according to an opinion poll by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA).

The survey also found that three-quarters (75 per cent) of respondents feel ill health is caused at least to some extent by a person's occupation.

"The financial crisis may lead organisations to ignore or minimise the importance of workplace safety and health," EU-OSHA director Jukka Takala conceded.

The expert added that there may be a risk of companies cutting investment into the welfare of their staff and said the organisation must do its best to discourage such actions.

He explained short-term savings could cause long-term problems and noted that healthy workplaces are often more productive.

Meanwhile, EU-OSHA recently released figures showing that more accidents occur in small businesses than in larger enterprises.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19421519-ADNFCR
