Managers told to make this year the safest ever for staff A call has been made for companies to step up their health and safety efforts in 2010 in a bid to make this year the safest ever for employees working in the industry.

According to Process and Control Today, Paul Darby, from health and safety and environmental training company Pivotal Performance, highlighted that accidents in the past have often occurred as a result of managers failing to appropriately focus on staff safety.

He especially advised managers to make suitable risk assessments on projects to ensure threats are minimised, with the use of equipment including safety helmets and hearing protection needed in certain environments.

The publication reports that Mr Darby said: "Employees are hurt and killed at work all the time, often when companies have ignored rules and guidelines that are there to protect people.

"I call on all directors and managers in manufacturing to make 2010 their safest year ever."

Mr Darby added that staff also have a responsibility to work securely and follow any health and safety procedures that have been put in place.

A recent report by Resource GB discovered that 35 per cent of employees deem the environment that they work in to be unsafe.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19579442-ADNFCR
