Managers warned to plan work at height

Managers warned to plan work at height The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned companies and managers to ensure that work at height is conducted safely and planned properly.

Angus Robbins, HSE inspector, noted that falls account for more injuries than any other cause.

The inspector quoted the most recent figures from 2006-07 that record 3,750 major injuries and 45 fatalities.

He noted that over half of all the deaths occur in the construction industry, a fact that led him to issue a warning to all companies to make sure that "sensible measures" are taken.

Mr Robbins commented: "Risks should be properly assessed and the results acted upon to ensure that decisions can be taken on appropriate equipment and working practices to be used so employees are safe."

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states that it is the responsibility of all employers to keep workers safe and ensure their welfare and health as far as is "reasonably practicable".

Companies may go some way to achieving this by ensuring that personal protective equipment, such as safety helmets and hi vis clothing, is supplied wherever it is needed.
