More accidents in London than in Scotland or Wales There were more serious or fatal accidents in London during 2009 than in the whole of Scotland or Wales, new figures have revealed.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the annual total for the capital was 14,576, which works out at roughly 280 work-related accidents per week.

This is double the 140 weekly workplace injuries reported in Wales, which had a total of 7,153 incidents during 2008-09.

Scotland had a total of 11,533 serious accidents during the same period, which equates to around 222 per week.

HSE London regional director Stephen Williams explained that "slips, trips and falls from height" are among the most common accidents.

"Many of these injuries are entirely preventable. We implore businesses to take practical action to manage the risks people face in their day-to-day work," he said.

Mr Williams added that risk assessments, training and protection from harmful substances could help cut the number of incidents in London workplaces.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19535931-ADNFCR
