National Recycling Awards introduce health and safety category The National Recycling Awards have recently introduced a new health and safety category for 2008.

It is hoped that the Wincanton Innovation in Health and Safety Practices Award will increase awareness of occupational health and safety, Environmental Expert reports.

Measures that could improve the safety rating of a business include the application of high vis clothing and workwear.

Chair of the judging panel Paul Sanderson, who is editor of Materials Recycling Week, pointed out that there are currently 162,500 people working in the sector - a number that is due to rise - which prompted him to call for further health and safety steps.

"It is important that health and safety practices evolve to meet this demand and that employees handling and sorting waste are working under the best possible conditions," he said.

The Health and Safety Executive recently reported that the number of fatal incidents in the waste management industry is over ten times the national average.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18683037-ADNFCR
