New construction safety proposals welcomed by IOSH The Donaghy report on construction safety laws has been welcomed by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) as a potential answer to "crucial" enforcement issues in the industry.

John Lacey, chairman of the IOSH construction group, has endorsed the One Death is Too Many report's recommendations as being representative of IOSH's own concerns over leadership and worker involvement in construction safety.

The organisation highlighted proposals for the extension of the Gangmasters Act and the need for increased investment in safety matters as being vital to driving down levels of industry fatalities.

Mr Lacey said: "It's crucial that we also have an adequate enforcement regime, including increased resources for inspection at the Health and Safety Executive."

IOSH's recommendation of the new proposals follows those of unions Prospect and Ucatt last week, and serves to reinforce the growing importance of adhering to construction safety laws such as the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations of 1992, which call for the use of appropriate workwear for employees.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19262701-ADNFCR
