New report outlines strict construction safety laws The government is to discuss a new report on safety conditions in construction which calls for the establishment of stricter laws and regulations for the industry.

Among the new measures proposed by the One Death Too Many report, a copy of which was revealed early to the Guardian, are stronger punishments for companies which violate safety laws and an extension of the Gangmasters Act to bar unsafe companies from providing labour.

The document's author Rita Donaghy, a former head of Acas, also called for the appointment of a full-time construction minister to help the government regulate the industry more directly.

Alan Ritchie, general secretary of the construction union Ucatt, welcomed the report, saying: "This report makes a series of vital recommendations which, when implemented, will have the effect of improving construction safety overnight and cutting deaths and accidents."

The implementation of these new recommendations would also increase the importance of compliance with health and safety regulations, such as those governing the provision of workwear such as safety helmets to construction workers.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19255756-ADNFCR
