Nicholas Hildyard, Finance Director at Arco, is to take up his appointment as the High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire on Thursday 5th April, at the Town Hall, Hedon following a sworn declaration witnessed by a Justice of the Peace and a Judge of the County.
The office of High Sheriff is at least one thousand years old. It is the oldest continuous secular Office under the Crown and Nick will be kept very busy with many engagements over the year. Historical functions include the High Sheriff attending Royal Visits, looking after the well being of High Court Judges, acting as the Returning Officer for parliamentary elections, proclaiming the accession of a new Sovereign, maintaining the loyalty of subjects to the Crown and participate in the newly established Citizenship Ceremonies where new Citizens make their Oath of Allegiance to the Queen.
The modern day High Sheriff in Hull and the East Riding also undertakes duties through the High Sheriffs' Tribune Trust together with Humberside Police to support and encourage voluntary and statutory organisations engaged in all aspects of law and order whose key aims are to:
- protect the vulnerable
- promote good citizenship
- tackle drug and alcohol abuse
- promote sport and good health
- improve road safety
- protect homes, businesses and transport
- promote a safe and vibrant community
In addition, Nick, has chosen, together with support from Arco, to lead an initiative that will take a double decker bus on a Roadshow around Hull and the East Riding for a three week period during May in order to raise the awareness and profile of Victim Support and its partner agencies and to help recruit much needed volunteers. Victim Support and its partner agencies help and advise victims of crime and hate and promote crime prevention, personal safety and fire prevention. Nick's father also championed Victim Support during his year of office in 1978.
Nick, who is a chartered accountant and a Deputy Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, explained that 'I have lived and worked in Hull and the East Riding nearly all my life. Accepting the role of High Sheriff for a year will enable me to contribute something to the community I love. I will go to areas that I have never visited before, face issues that don't usually affect me and dedicate this year to helping make other people's lives better'.
