Noise restriction laws 'to protect public safety'

Noise restriction laws 'to protect public safety' From this month onwards, the UK entertainment industry will now be governed by the same noise restriction legislation as everyone else.

From April 6th, the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 were expanded by the government to apply to pubs, clubs, amplified live music venues, orchestras and other venues where music is played.

With 170,000 people in the UK suffering from deafness, tinnitus and other ear conditions, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) believes that the new regulations will serve to protect workers' hearing.

Under the new rules, employers must ensure that hearing protection is worn by anyone working in conditions where they are exposed to noises of 85 decibels. There is also an exposure limit of 87 decibels, taking account of protective equipment, beyond which workers must not be exposed.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 cam into force for all other industry sectors in April 2006, at which point they replaced the Noise at Work Regulations 1989.
