Offshore oil and gas industry chief pledges to improve safety standards A leading figure in the offshore oil and gas industry has pledged to improve safety standards in the sector.

This comes after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that there were 50 "major injuries" in 2009-10, up by 20 on the previous year.

In addition, the total of serious hydrocarbon releases - gas escapes regarded as "potential precursors to a major incident" - stood at 85, up from 61.

Robert Paterson, health and safety director of industry body Oil and Gas UK, promised to continue the "relentless pursuit" of higher safety standards.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said: "The figures this year are particularly disappointing, we had a good year last year."

"This is a nasty kick for us," Mr Paterson added.

The HSE did, however, say that no workers were killed in areas it regulated, for the third year.

In a bid to reduce the number of serious injuries, the safety authority implores Britons to use appropriate workwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-800040228-ADNFCR
