One in four Cumbrian construction sites fail inspections More than a quarter of construction sites in Cumbria failed safety checks carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), it has been confirmed.

Inspectors visited 45 sites across the county and issued 14 enforcement notices at 12 of them.

According to the regulatory body, the majority of the notices related to unsafe work being carried out at height.

A spokesman claimed that most of the sites that were inspected had good procedures in place, but 12 were "letting the industry down".

Mark Cottriall, the HSE's principal inspector for construction in Cumbria, said: "We will continue to make unannounced visits to sites and take enforcement action when necessary, until the message gets across."

Mr Cottriall added that it is not worth risking the safety of employees in an effort to save money.

Each year, the construction industry experiences a disproportionately high number of injuries and fatalities.

As a consequence, the HSE encourages people employed within the sector to always use the correct workwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19687496-ADNFCR
