PM calls for end to teenage deaths at work The prime minister told the Labour party conference that it is important that steps are taken to eradicate teenager deaths and injuries at work.

Gordon Brown has been told by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) that there are too many instances where employers do not induct or supervise young workers properly.

Richard Jones, of the IOSH, noted that in the last ten years, 64 workers under the age of 19 have been killed and a further 15,000 injured.

He commented: "This tragic loss of young lives, and the numbers suffering injuries like amputations, broken limbs and severe burns, shows that too many employers are failing to look after their teenage employees properly."

Mr Jones added that all firms should ensure that young employees are trained properly and noted that they are a particularly vulnerable section of the workforce.

Companies are required under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 to provide labourers with suitable guidance on how to use gear such as safety helmets and spill kits.
