PPE can help contain bird flu, expert says Personal protective equipment (PPE) is one of the most important features of a successful containment plan for bird flu, an expert has said.

Discussing how India can prevent the spread of its current outbreak, Dr Madhumita Dobe - a representative from the Indian Public Health Association - wrote how PPE can play its part in an article for CommodityOnline.

"Persons exposed to avian influenza infected or potentially infected poultry are recommended to follow good infection control practices including careful attention to hand hygiene… and use of PPE like gloves and masks."

Safety equipment and clothing is necessary for those taking part in the culling of birds, which is the first action that needs to be taken to prevent the virus from spreading, Dr Dobe said.

His comments are supported by the Health & Safety Executive, which also recommends the use of PPE and strict hygiene control to limit exposure to bird flu.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18452649-ADNFCR
