PPE needed to prevent sewer cleaner deaths

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is extremely important with regards to preventing the deaths of sewer cleaners, works have stated.
A supervisor at a sewer cleaning company in India made the comments when speaking to the Indian Express about two of his fellow workers who choked to death while carrying out the dangerous job over the weekend.
"We work in extremely deadly conditions as the VNN never provides us any safety equipments including long boots, face mask and lanterns," he said.
"Then also we had demanded safety equipments at work, but VNN officials paid no heed to our demands."
VNN stands for Varanasi Nagar Nigam, which is the company the supervisor worked for.
Among important equipment for sewer cleaning is oxygen cylinders and gas masks.
The Health & Safety Executive says that each year, most sewer workers will suffer at least one case of work-related illness and some diseases are potentially fatal.
