Phase two of the HSE's PABIAC launched The second phase of the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) Paper and Board Industry Advisory Committee (PABIAC) plan to increase safety measures in the sector has begun.

It is hoped that the strategy will reduce the injury rate each year from 117 in 10,000 employees to just 85 per 10,000 by 2011, reports Safety Media.

The scheme, called Making a Difference 2008-11, also aims to improve the management performance in health and safety and generally increase awareness of the dangers and issues involved.

James Barrett, head of the manufacturing sector of the HSE, commented: "Making a Difference 2008-2011 will help encourage those companies who have yet to show real progress to make a start on the road to improvement."

He added that it was hoped that firms making advances would be reminded to maintain their good work in the field.

HSE guidelines advise firms to ensure that proper personal protective equipment is provided for employees and that items such as safety gloves and goggles fit those using them.
