Practical prevention the key to safety, says HSE chief The chief executive of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has emphasised the need to take action rather than simply follow regulations when promoting health and safety at work.

Addressing the annual conference of the North West Regional Association of Occupational Health and Safety Groups, HSE's Geoffrey Podger stressed that workplace safety should be a matter of practical safety measures rather than fulfilling quotas.

HSE regulations outline a number of practical measures that employers may take to protect worker safety, including the provision of workwear such as safety helmets.

However, Mr Podger expressed his concern that many businesses have become more concerned with ticking boxes and complying with law, and advised of the need for a proper focus on worker protection to prevent accidents and injury.

He said: "Rather than simply following rules and procedures for the sake of it, people need to think about what the real dangers are where they work."ADNFCR-1200-ID-19223854-ADNFCR
