Proper planning 'necessary for work at height' The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has urged companies requiring labourers to work at height to ensure jobs are properly planned.

A representative of the body stated that in some cases, the risks of working high up are "evident" and reminded firms that any incidents that do occur should be reported to the HSE as soon as possible.

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require firms to plan jobs appropriately and ensure that they are supervised and carried out in a safe manner.

Failing to install safety signs or provide workers with safety helmets when they are needed could result in prosecution in the event of an accident.

Martin Overstall, principle construction inspector for Worcestershire, commented: "Proper planning for such work and taking necessary precautions to prevent falls are often simple and there is ample free guidance readily available to help companies take the right action."

Companies looking to improve their safety record may wish to take advantage of the HSE's Ladder Exchange scheme, which enables companies to swap old or faulty equipment for new ones at a discounted price.
