Protective clothing on the agenda over mercury fears

Protective clothing on the agenda over mercury fears Protective equipment and clothing has been put on the agenda following reports that the mercury content in energy-saving lightbulbs might be dangerous.

The news provoked numerous letter to the Telegraph, with some shocked by the revelations, while others joked about the matter.

One writer, Anthony Briggs, said that when changing his bulb in the future he will "take the usual precautions, ensuring my property is taped off to exclude the public and placing warning notices at the gate and in the local press".

"My family will be sent away. I shall wear the proper protective clothing," he added.

Mr Briggs comments may appear to be tongue-in-cheek, but they do, however, illustrate the dangers facing those working with mercury on a daily basis.

One of the best ways to prevent exposure to mercury is to have procedures and safety equipment in place to deal with any spillages as soon as they happen, according to the Health & Safety Executive.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18416082-ADNFCR
