Recycling plant to revamp safety The Household Waste Recovery Centre in Morpeth is to be revamped this September to improve its facilities, in particular its health and safety profile.

Traffic flow in and out of the complex will have an increased number of access points under the new scheme in a bid to decrease the levels of congestion, reports Recycle.co.uk.

In addition, the lighting of the area will be enhanced which will improve visibility and allow the site to remain open for longer in the winter.

Work will start in September and should be completed by February 2009.

Despite being closed for five months, it is thought that once completed, the new centre will be able to process a much greater volume of recyclable waste as well as creating a "higher safety profile" for the floor plan of the site.

The HSE reported that 241 employees were killed at work between 2006 and 2007 and that there were over 140,000 other injuries.

Guidelines for the waste management sector are provided by the HSE, including what personal protective equipment needs to be made available, for example, hi vis clothing and safety gloves.
