Roofer fined for putting workers at risk The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has today warned construction companies and roofers to ensure that employees are protected and provided with adequate workwear when operating at height.

Today's warning comes after a roofer was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay costs, for allowing employees to carry out roofing work without any protection from falls.

HSE inspector David Bradley said: "Employers have a legal responsibility to protect the lives and safety of workers. This particular project was very poorly planned, and there were no controls in place to prevent falls from the roof where in areas there was potential to fall 30 feet to the ground."

Mr Bradley pointed out that fatalities in the refurbishment sector had increased by more than 50 per cent over the last year and said the government would not tolerate poor workplace standards when affordable controls could easily be implemented.

According to the HSE, people with medical conditions such as epilepsy, recurring dizziness and severe lung conditions should be prevented from working at height.
