Royal Mail makes health and safety changes Royal Mail has admitted that it is reducing the number of bicycles used by postmen because of the increasingly heavy loads they are forced to carry.

According to the organisation, there were 1,065 injuries sustained by postmen on bicycles during 2008-09, a 14 per cent increase on the year before.

Paul Tolhurst, Royal Mail's field operations director, revealed the heavy sacks may have to be abandoned completely because they had caused an increase in accidents.

Mr Tolhurst said: "We have seen an increase in the accidents linked to the use of cycles on busy road networks when workers are carrying bags. It is a matter of safety."

Meanwhile, figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have revealed that the construction and agriculture industries are proportionally worst affected by workplace accidents.

To reduce injuries and fatalities in these sectors, the HSE implores Britons to use appropriate workwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19911233-ADNFCR
