Safe practices are paramount in food industry It is vital for companies in the food industry to ensure that they have safe systems of work in place, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has stated.

According to the inspectorate, it is important to ensure that machinery is properly maintained and that workers are protected from moving parts.

Other means of ensuring the welfare of workers might involve providing staff with suitable personal protective equipment such as safety gloves or food safety workwear.

David Kivlin, HSE inspector, commented: "Particularly in food processing industries the need for strict hygiene through regular cleaning is essential, so safe practices are paramount."

He added that many companies could prevent injuries by ensuring that jobs are tackled in a safe manner.

Having staff trained to assess and minimise risks could also help cut down the number of workplace injuries.

The HSE is currently running its Shattered Lives campaign to cut down the number of incidents relating to slips, trips and falls. ADNFCR-1200-ID-19102937-ADNFCR
