Safety advice app for hairdressers wins award A businessman from Manchester has been praised for his innovative use of a smartphone app to promote effective health and safety measures in hairdressing salons.

Anthony Tetlow, managing director of Safety Smart, came up with the iPhone app after being approached by a salon manager who was finding it difficult to inform her staff about health and safety issues in such a busy environment.

He won the first Innovation in Safety - Small Business Award presented by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.

Mr Tetlow said he was "extremely proud" to have won the award and had not been expecting it.

"We are a small business that wanted to take a different direction with health and safety. A considerable amount of work has gone into the development of our health and safety app and we have had some fantastic feedback from hair salons across the UK which have been using it," he explained.

Firms that want to inform their staff of health and safety elements in the workplace could invest in safety signs.
