Safety and PPE concerns should not prevent school trips, says HSC

Safety and PPE concerns should not prevent school trips, says HSC Health, safety and PPE concerns should not be used as an excuse to stop school trips, the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) has claimed today.

The government body claims that school trips are an "essential" part of school life and do not create a risk to children if properly managed.

Judith Hackitt, chair of the HSC, said: "My message is to take a common sense and proportionate approach when managing the health and safety aspects of organising a school trip. Share good practice with colleagues, reams of paper work is rarely the way to effective safety management."

Ms Hackitt added that advice and good safety practices should be shared between schools.

The HSC advises educators to carry out risk assessments before organising trips, which should include steps such as identifying hazards and deciding on precautionary measures.
