Safety gloves, procedures and guards 'a must'

Safety gloves, procedures and guards 'a must' The importance of safety gloves and procedures when using machinery has been highlighted after a worker was left with permanent damage to her hand.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the company found responsible for the incident was fined £6,000 and told to pay £2,751 in costs.

Oxford worker Paulina Lleshi was cleaning a fondant enrober machine used for sponge cake icing when her hand came into contact with a large revolving screw, which cut off the ends of two of her fingers.

An investigation found that there had been insufficient risk assessments carried out on the apparatus.

Commenting, HSE inspector Matthew Lee said it is vital that companies ensure that the appropriate guards are put in place to prevent accidents.

"In this case any basic assessment would have identified that access to the dangerous part of the machine was possible and this was easily preventable by a very simple modification to the machine," he explained.

The equipment has since been adjusted to ensure there is no repeat of Ms Lleshi's experience.

Meanwhile, the HSE has issued a similar warning to businesses after a north Wales company was found guilty of failing to prevent two similar incidents in which employees hands were trapped in machinery.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19396083-ADNFCR
