Safety measures are needed for work on fragile roofs Agricultural companies should bear in mind the dangers their staff face while working from height and could implement safety policies to avoid accidents.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched an investigation into one farm after an employee sustained multiple fractures when he fell through a fragile roof.

While cleaning the roof of a barn, the 39-year-old member of staff was walking on scaffold boards but crashed through the asbestos cement structure and fell five metres.

HSE inspector Kim Wicks commented: "Working at height without any safety precautions in place will always put employees at risk. In this case there was an added risk as the surface the men were working on was fragile.

"Standards for working on fragile roofs are well-established and extensive guidance is available on HSE's website," she added.

Staff who are working on roofs and at height could don safety helmets to protect their head in the case of a fall.
