Safety notices 'must be acknowledged'

Safety notices 'must be acknowledged' Companies which are issued with safety orders must make every effort to comply with them or else face legal action, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned.

Its message came after the director of a garage was fined for failing to make changes to his workplace as specified by an improvement notice, which had asked that a statutory examination be carried out on a pressure system compressor.

The employer could not produce evidence of an examination and failed to reply to official letters concerning the matter.

HSE inspector Jack Wilby commented that the director had "flagrantly disregarded his duties to comply with health and safety regulations, showing little respect for the risks to others from pressure systems".

"Despite having more than ten months to put things right and receiving written and verbal advice explaining his duties and how he could comply, he chose to do nothing," the inspector added.

Workers who use machinery in their line of business should don appropriate workwear to protect them from harm.
