Safety standards are still important on boats

Safety standards are still important on boats  Safety standards onboard boats and barges should be just as comprehensive and adhered to as they are on dry land, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has pointed out.

Its reminder comes after two men died on a barge moored at a salmon farm in Scotland due to lack of oxygen.

Inspectors found the employees had not been provided with sufficient instruction, information and training to work safely in the sealed chambers onboard the vessel.

HSE principal inspector Barry Baker commented: "The deaths in this case should have been avoided - the risks should have been identified and a clear and safe system of work prepared.

"Only those fully trained in confined space work and emergency rescue should have carried out the work in the chamber, and only after a full risk assessment including air monitoring and testing for oxygen levels."

Safety signs could be used in similar workplaces to give important information to employees.
