Safety still important during recession Business have been warned not to skimp on equipment such as safety helmets during the recession, because their health and safety responsibilities remain the same.

Lord McKenzie, health and safety minister, said the difficulties in the economy are not an excuse for failing to ensure the welfare of workers.

He asserted that the Health and Safety Executive would not slow down its efforts to enforce good practice, such as wearing appropriate workwear.

"Skimping on health and safety is wrong," Lord McKenzie commented.

He warned that firms who breach regulations could find that the "financial and reputational" consequences could be serious.

Despite this, he recognised that many businesses would find the coming months difficult due to the economic climate in the UK.

This comes after the International Monetary Fund warned that the recession would continue into 2010.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19082434-ADNFCR
