Safety to start at school An MP is trying to get occupational health and safety made part of the National Curriculum in a bid to reduce the number of work-related injuries.

In an event supported by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Michael Clapham, MP for Barnsley West and chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Occupational Health and Safety, called for workplace safety classes to be made compulsory.

Mr Clapham noted that 15,000 young people had suffered serious injury in the workplace in the last ten years , which could have been avoided if there was greater awareness of the importance of using proper workwear, safety helmets and hi vis clothing.

He said: "These figures are a shocking indictment of some employers' attitudes to their workers – an attitude that isn’t acceptable in the 21st century."

The Health and Safety Executive reports that 241 workers were killed at work between 2006 and 2007, which is a rate of eight in every one million employees.
