Safety training contributes to TFS award Thermo Fisher Scientific (TFS) won the Healthy People Healthy Business Award from the Northumberland Care Trust in part due to its safety training system.

Staff at the company are offered opportunities to develop their skills. In addition to this the firm has in place a number of procedures to deal with hazards and dangers within the working environment.

Maureen Shepherd, a workplace health specialist at the NCT, commented: "It exemplifies the growing commitment across the north-east to embed healthy and safe working practices into all workplaces."

She went on to say that winning the award was "a real achievement" and noted that the firm had to meet a wide range of criteria to emerge victorious.

Providing suitable personal safety equipment may be a simple way to improve safety levels in the workplace.

Gear such as safety gloves and spill kits must be provided and be well maintained in accordance with the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992.
