Safety workwear need highlighted by explosion The importance of using the correct safety workwear and procedures has been underlined by injuries caused to two University of Liverpool students during a laboratory explosion.

Shards of flying glass caused a man and a woman to receive cuts to their face, while the blast also caused burns.

It is believed a cocktail of chemicals reacted during an experiment in a fume cupboard, causing a large explosion which blew out a number of windows.

Both students were taken to Royal Liverpool hospital by ambulance, while a third who was standing nearby was unharmed.

The Health Protection Agency has been informed of the accident, while the university's Professor Andrew Hodgson confirmed to the Liverpool Daily Post that the students are "going to be all right" after being taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, the Health and Safety Executive has issued a warning to construction firms after a London-based company was fined for flaunting asbestos rules.
