Scaffolding warning issued by HSE

Scaffolding warning issued by HSE Employers in the construction industry need to ensure safe procedures are followed when erecting scaffolding at worksites, says the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Lisa Bailey, an inspector at the health and safety regulator, said poor practices by firms could be putting the safety of staff at risk.

She urged companies to give their staff the correct training so future accidents could be avoided.

Her comments come after HSE figures have shown that around 70 people deaths occur each year caused by work-related accidents in the construction industry.

Many of these might be avoided if employers invest in protective equipment such as workwear and safety helmets, and ensure workers are properly trained in how to use them.

"Scaffolding can be very dangerous if it hasn't been properly constructed," Ms Bailey said. "It is therefore vital that employers make sure staff are fully trained and competent."

Firms who invest in health and safety will reap the benefits in the long run because accidents cost firms money when employees are forced to take days off, HSE chief inspector of construction Stephen Williams commented this week.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19037106-ADNFCR
